BARBARIANS ON THE MOVE

The Migration Period is, by definition, an age of movement. Maps show it clearly. Imagine, for instance, the way in which the Times Atlas of World History maps the process (as described by Walter Goffart).

The projection is unusual and eye-catching; the lines of tribal movements are broad – ribbons rather than strings; bold arrows are in evidence; and the colors are applied from a rich and carefully assorted palette. Behold the Visigoths: in an almost unbroken run of sinuous green, they branch away from the Ostrogoths at the northern edge of ancient Scythia and flow into Roman territory, coursing to and fro in graceful curves reminiscent of Dark Age interlace, until an arrow finally drives them to Toledo.1
